Jet2 Launches Gatwick Flights: Can It Compete on Price with Low-Cost Rivals?
Jet2 Gatwick Launch: Price Battle with Low-Cost Airlines

Jet2 Takes Off from Gatwick: A New Player in the Budget Travel Arena

Passengers arriving at Gatwick's South Terminal might initially mistake Jet2 for the airport's dominant airline, thanks to its prominent check-in area and familiar red branding. However, this newcomer faces stiff competition from established low-cost carriers as it launches operations from the Sussex hub.

Expanding Horizons: Jet2's Gatwick Network

From today, Jet2 is deploying Airbus A321neo aircraft on routes from Gatwick to key holiday destinations across Europe. This includes multiple airports in Spain, such as the Balearic and Canary Islands, along with Faro in Portugal, Verona and Naples in Italy, and ten Greek locations. Additional targets feature Antalya in Turkey, Paphos in Cyprus, Pula in Croatia, Burgas in Bulgaria, and Malta.

Despite its visible presence, Jet2's fleet of six planes at Gatwick is vastly outnumbered by easyJet, which operates over a dozen times as many aircraft. The airline also contends with rivals like Tui, British Airways' Euroflyer, Vueling, and Wizz Air on many of these routes.

Competitive Edge: Service Over Price?

Steve Heapy, chief executive of Jet2, remains optimistic about the airline's prospects. He highlights Gatwick's large catchment area and the appeal of Jet2's customer service. "We've got two full flights departing today – to Tenerife and Alicante," he said. "It's great to be here launching our operation and welcoming customers, many of whom are flying with us for the first time and will experience our award-winning customer service."

In the Mediterranean flight-only market, where passengers often prioritize the cheapest deals, Jet2 faces a challenge. Test bookings by The Independent for flights from Gatwick to six destinations in Spain, Portugal, and Greece revealed that easyJet offered the lowest fares on three routes. Jet2 and Ryanair each had the best price for one destination, while Jet2 tied with easyJet for Zante in October.

However, Jet2 distinguishes itself with a more generous cabin baggage allowance, typically saving passengers around £30 compared to budget rivals. Mr. Heapy emphasized, "Different airlines compete in different ways – like supermarkets at different price points. We differentiate ourselves through service." He added that Jet2 avoids cancelling flights lightly, striving to get customers to their destinations reliably.

Strategic Entry and Future Prospects

Gatwick, the world's busiest single-runway airport, has long been a target for Jet2. The Leeds-based company secured slots only after infrastructure improvements freed up space, announcing the move just four months ago. "We moved quickly, agreeing to base six aircraft here – five based locally and one overseas," Mr. Heapy noted. "Flights went on sale less than six months ago, and today they're full."

Amid fierce rivalry and the need to charter additional aircraft for other bases, Jet2 informed investors that the Gatwick operation is expected to "move into profitability" by 2029, with "meaningful profit growth thereafter." The launch coincides with geopolitical uncertainties affecting demand for eastern Mediterranean destinations, but Mr. Heapy reports a recovery in confidence and offers.

"Ultimately, people still want to travel," he said. "They want a break, especially given the current mood and weather in the UK. Holidays remain something people look forward to, and we're ready to meet that demand. It's been a long-term project and we're delighted to finally be here. We hope this is just the start and that we can expand further in the coming years."
