The tiny island of Procida, often overshadowed by its glamorous neighbours Capri and Ischia, has been named Italy's Capital of Culture for the year. It is the first island to receive the prestigious title, which comes with a programme of cultural projects involving 240 international artists.
Located just an hour by ferry from Naples, Procida is a picturesque patch of land with buildings painted in chalky pastel shades. The inauguration featured eccentric performance art, including German artist Frank Bolter constructing a giant paper boat and sailing it out to sea with the help of local children.
Despite being a filming location for the 1999 film The Talented Mr Ripley, Procida has remained largely under the radar. This year, however, it aims to attract a wider audience with its free electric bus service and events spanning music, art, and cinema.
Locals are fiercely proud of the recognition. Vincenzo, 78, owner of Ristorante Graziella in the fishing village of Corricella, said: 'Ischia is the big island and Capri is the rich one but we are the authentic island. It’s great we’re being noticed.' Volunteer Giulia added: 'Procida is a really open, friendly place – there’s a big sense of community.'
The island's history is also on display at the Terra Murata, a walled area dating from the 15th century, built to protect against pirates. The Palazzo d’Avalos, once a prison, now hosts exhibitions and offers views of Naples and Mount Vesuvius.
