The Isle of Harris in Scotland has been named one of the most peaceful places for a summer holiday, ranking sixth in a study by travel experts Solmar Villas. The island, part of the Harris and Lewis archipelago in the Outer Hebrides, offers white-sand beaches, stunning scenery, and a sparse population of just 20,500 residents, making it an ideal escape from crowded tourist hotspots.
Study Methodology and Top Rankings
Solmar Villas analyzed over 160 locations worldwide to identify destinations that offer a crowd-free getaway. While most top spots are abroad, the Isle of Harris stood out as the only UK location on the list. The top five included Alonissos (Greece), El Hierro (Spain), Skopelos (Greece), Mustique (St. Vincent and Grenadines), and La Gomera (Spain).
Luskentyre Beach: A Caribbean-Like Gem
Among the island's highlights is Luskentyre Beach, frequently listed among the world's most stunning beaches. Its brilliant white sand and turquoise waters resemble the Caribbean, though the water temperature is cooler. Located on the northern coast of South Harris, the beach is sheltered by the island of Taransay. Visitors can spot dolphins, seals, otters, eagles, and even whales while strolling along the pristine sands.
Easy Access and Family-Friendly Appeal
Daily ferry services from mainland Scotland connect to the Isle of Harris, and vehicles can be transported for easier exploration. Sharon Bradbury, a travel expert at Solmar Villas, noted: "Many families don't have the option of travelling outside the school holidays, so choosing the right destination becomes even more important. What stands out from this research is that some of the world's most enjoyable summer destinations don't necessarily attract the biggest crowds. A quieter destination often means a more relaxed experience from the moment you arrive."
