Travel Influencer's 'Filthy' Bologna Claim Sparks Online Backlash
Influencer Brands Bologna 'Filthy', Leaves Holiday Early

Travel Influencer's Harsh Critique of Bologna Sparks Widespread Controversy

A travel influencer has ignited a fierce online debate after branding the historic Italian city of Bologna as the "worst" in the country, describing it as filthy and claiming she was so disappointed that she cut her holiday short, willingly losing money on her hotel booking.

Scathing Social Media Review Draws Immediate Criticism

Karo, who shares content online under the handle @karosolotravel, took to TikTok to voice her strong disapproval of Bologna, a city celebrated globally for its UNESCO-designated medieval porticoes, rich architectural heritage, and renowned pasta specialities like tortellini and tagliatelle al ragù.

In her video clips, Karo focused on instances of graffiti on metal waste bins and stone columns, a discarded cigarette end on the ground, and a rough sleeper outside a shop entrance. She also filmed herself walking with a tissue pressed against her nose, asserting the area smelled offensive.

"The worst Italian city I've ever been to," she wrote in the video caption. "It smells of urine everywhere, it's filthy, and you can tell it hasn't been cleaned in years. Why aren't the city authorities cleaning the streets and buildings? Those orange buildings are black. And that awful stench."

Karo further claimed her experience was so negative that she fled to Rimini, abandoned her hotel, and lost her money, stating she came to eat pasta bolognese but felt like vomiting and barely ate anything.

Swift and Forceful Pushback from Other Travellers

Her remarks prompted an immediate and substantial backlash from other TikTok users, many of whom passionately defended Bologna's character and cleanliness.

  • One commenter wrote: "I spent five days in Bologna last April. Walked everywhere including St Luca. TOTALLY DISAGREE. I LOVED BOLOGNA."
  • Another simply stated: "Bologna is beautiful!" while a third quipped: "Complaining that the 2000 year old buildings look like they are 2000 years old."
  • A fourth person declared: "One of the most beautiful cities I visited!!"

Resident Blames Mass Tourism for City's Issues

Adding a local perspective, someone claiming to be a resident shared a different critique, suggesting the problem lies not with the city's inherent state but with modern pressures.

"Bologna became much much worse since it became a heavily touristy city," the user commented. "Mass tourism is destroying my city!"

Another user offered a more measured rebuttal, respecting Karo's opinion but firmly disputing her assessment of reality.

"I respect your opinion but in my view, [it] does not represent the reality at all. I guess [you] didn't match with the place. Bologna is an amazing city with unique character. I did not find it dirty at all and it was nice and tidy. In my view, I did find Bologna more authentic in comparison to other Italian cities."

The controversy highlights the subjective nature of travel experiences and the powerful, often polarising, role social media influencers play in shaping perceptions of popular destinations, especially in a country as culturally rich and visitor-dependent as Italy.
