Active Sunderland BIG Walk draws hundreds to Herrington Country Park
Hundreds join Active Sunderland BIG Walk at Herrington Park

Hundreds of people took part in the Active Sunderland BIG Walk at Herrington Country Park on Sunday, September 27. Participants of all ages set off on one of four route options, ranging from a three-mile circular route around the park to a challenging 13-and-a-half-mile route through surrounding countryside and woodland.

Council praise for participants

Councillor Jonathon Emerson, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Adult Services at Sunderland City Council, said: “I’d like to say a big well done to everyone who took part in the Active Sunderland BIG Walk this year.

“I have enjoyed the walk myself and I hope everyone who took part today has enjoyed this brilliant community event and the chance to take in Sunderland's beautiful countryside while spending quality time outdoors.”

Health benefits and future walks

Walking is described as one of the easiest ways to get moving and a great way to improve health, with every step counting towards improving fitness, reducing stress, increasing energy levels and providing an opportunity to spend time outdoors.

Those interested in regular organised walks can join a programme of weekly volunteer-led walks offered through the Active Sunderland Wellness Walking Programme. More information is available at Active Sunderland Walking Programme - MySunderland, or by contacting active@sunderland.gov.uk.
