House swapping: the chic free alternative to Airbnb
House swapping: the chic free alternative to Airbnb

House swapping and sitting offer a wallet-friendly way to holiday, but they come with responsibilities. Unlike Airbnb, these arrangements involve mutual exchange, often including pet care or making your own home available to others.

Angela Laws, head of community at Trusted Housesitters, stresses that house sitting is not a free vacation but a mutually beneficial exchange. She notes that many countries, including the UK, consider it work, so a working visa may be required for international sits.

Emily Budin, an Australian living in London, has swapped her flat for properties worldwide using HomeExchange. She says the annual fee is roughly the cost of one night in a decent hotel, and points can be earned and spent flexibly, even if your home is not top-tier.

Both experts emphasise the importance of communication. Laws recommends video calls before a sit, while Budin prefers clear messaging to set expectations. House sitter Hannah Wilkinson advises being organised but open to the unexpected, as opportunities can arise spontaneously.
