Discover Gran Canaria's North: The Ultimate 'Soft Travel' Escape from Crowded Resorts
Gran Canaria's North: A 'Soft Travel' Haven Away from Crowds

Gran Canaria's Northern Charm: A 'Soft Travel' Paradise

The arrival at our hotel in northern Gran Canaria was marked by an unexpectedly warm welcome. Seven plump cats, their fur displaying a spectrum of colours reminiscent of a paint chart, affectionately rubbed against our legs as my husband unloaded bags from the rental car. Immediately, we sensed a world apart from the bustling beach resorts that dominate the island's southern coastline.

The Rise of 'Soft Travel' in 2025

This secluded region has become a favourite among travellers embracing the burgeoning 'Soft Travel' trend of 2025. This concept prioritises simplicity, spontaneity, and escaping crowded tourist hotspots to enjoy a holiday at one's own pace. Recent research indicates that 22 per cent of travellers planned such a break last year, highlighting a shift towards more mindful tourism.

The local Canarios naturally embody this philosophy, encapsulated in their phrase 'despacito y con buena letra', meaning 'take it slowly and do it right'. Northern Gran Canaria offers a more authentic island experience, free from the overwhelming crowds found elsewhere.

Historic Accommodation and Leisurely Exploration

Our colonial-style hotel, the 14-room Las Longueras, built in the late 19th century, perfectly set the tone for a relaxed getaway. Historically a retreat for diplomats, heads of state, and bullfighters seeking peace among its orange and lemon groves, Las Longueras stands as the antithesis of commercial tourism.

While a vehicle is essential to reach this part of the island, once there, car keys can be set aside thanks to endless hiking trails winding into the hills. The nearby village of Agaete, just over a mile away, hosts the ancient burial site of El Maipes, where approximately 700 tombs are carved into solidified lava.

Culinary Delights and Cultural Highlights

Agaete's small port boasts numerous tasty fish restaurants, and natural pools along the beach provide calm spots to enjoy gentle waters. The area comes alive in August during the Fiesta de La Rama parade, where participants, known as 'rameros', march through streets waving branches to honour the Virgin Mary, symbolising unity and collective joy.

Within a half-hour drive, other attractions await. Finca La Laja, home to Europe's only coffee plantation, offers tours detailing its 200-year history under the Jorge family. Their nearby restaurant, La Casa Romantica, celebrates Canarian cuisine with pride. Sampling the plantation's signature Agaete coffee—a rich, chocolatey brew—transforms one's morning coffee routine.

Further culinary exploration led to Mundo del Platano, a banana plantation offering everything from fresh fruit to banana hand cream. Leisurely drives to villages like Arucas reveal Gothic cathedrals built from dark volcanic stone, while the fishing village of Puerto de las Nieves attracts swimmers with its calm waters.

Climate Contrasts and Southern Contrasts

Gran Canaria's microclimate creates a divide: the south tends to be sunny, hot, and dry, while the north experiences more rain and evening chills. This variation appeals to 'soft travel' enthusiasts seeking to avoid sun-seeking masses.

Nevertheless, the south holds its own allure, notably the dunes of Maspalomas, a mix of palm groves and desert edged by a lagoon. With no clear paths, we trekked through shifting sands as yellow-legged gulls soared above.

To maintain tranquillity while exploring the south, we stayed at the Salobre Hotel, nestled in craggy valleys near Maspalomas. It serves as a base to discover Gran Canaria's 37 miles of beaches, such as Playa de las Mujeres on the southern tip—a raw, amenity-free beach ideal for a soft travel stop.

Embracing Your Own Pace

Gran Canaria truly offers a fabled space to relax. Whether meandering along mountain roads or idling with friendly felines, the island invites you to set your own pace and immerse in its authentic charm.
