Globetrotter Completes Epic 193-Country Tour and Names Favourite
A seasoned traveller known as Ramblin' Randy, hailing from San Diego, has accomplished an extraordinary feat by visiting all 193 United Nations member states. His journey culminated in 2023 with a trip to Turkmenistan, but he reveals that selecting his favourite country was surprisingly straightforward.
Why Brazil Stood Out as the Top Choice
Randy explained that his decision was simple because Brazil is the only nation that inspired him to make a life-changing move. "I always get asked what's my favourite country, and the answer for me is so easy because well, it's the only country that I packed up everything, quit my job, left everything behind and moved to," he said.
His fascination with Brazil began during a flight over Recife, a coastal city where he spotted beautiful, coral, pastel-coloured high-rises right along the beach. This sight reminded him of Miami Beach and prompted a follow-up visit. On that trip, he secured an apartment and then resigned from his job to relocate permanently, describing it as "one of the most exciting times of my life."
The Allure of Brazil's Natural Wonders
Brazil, the largest country in South America, boasts an extensive 4,500-mile coastline along the Atlantic Ocean and borders every nation on the continent except Ecuador and Chile. It is also home to nearly 60% of the Amazon Rainforest, with the Amazon River featuring prominently in the north. This river is inhabited by millions of species, including pink river dolphins and piranhas.
Challenges of Visiting Turkmenistan
Completing his global tour was no small task, especially when it came to Turkmenistan, which Randy described as "one of the most mysterious countries on the planet." Entry is heavily restricted, requiring travellers to use an approved tour company. Reflecting on his final destination, he noted, "It's bittersweet. A pin for every country, and this is the last one - Turkmenistan. Here we go."
Embracing Global Cultures
Through his travels, Randy has learned to accept, embrace, and cherish diverse cultures. His adventures have provided a unique perspective on the world's 195 recognised nations, which include 193 UN member states and two non-member observer states: Vatican City and Palestine.
In 2019, after visiting 120 countries, Randy compiled a top 10 list that included Switzerland, Djibouti, Brunei, and Armenia, but Brazil remained his undisputed favourite. This journey underscores how travel can transform lives and inspire profound personal changes.
