Glasgow's oldest restaurant The Buttery is an 1870s time capsule

The Buttery, described as Glasgow's oldest restaurant, has been serving diners on Argyll Street since 1870, offering a traditional "olde world" dining experience in the heart of Scotland's largest city.

Located less than 15 minutes on foot from Central Railway Station, the vintage eatery is known for its elegant interiors featuring dark wood and tartan decor. Described as a "true Glasgow institution," the restaurant has remained popular with locals since it first opened its doors in 1870.

Menus and Dining Options

The Buttery serves lunch, pre-theatre, and à la carte menus from Tuesday to Sunday, with dishes crafted by its chefs using high-quality, locally sourced produce. Separate vegetarian, vegan, and children's menus are available, along with gluten-free options.

The à la carte menu includes starters such as Cullen skink, mackerel, lamb shoulder, whipped feta salad, and scallops. Mains feature wild Highland venison, Scottish beef fillet, halibut, and whole sea bream and prawns, while desserts include crème brulée and sticky ginger loaf.

The set lunch menu is priced at £35 for two courses and £43 for three courses. Starters include salmon tian and a soup of the day, with mains such as Gressingham Duck and seafood tagliatelle. Desserts include ice cream and orange and cardamon panna cotta.

Drinks and Customer Reviews

The restaurant also offers separate cocktail and wine menus. Cocktails include a Coconut Margarita, a Salt and Chili Martini, a Limoncello Spritz, and a Sweet Skye made with Talisker whisky, whisky liqueur, raspberry, and soda on the rocks.

One diner wrote in a Google review: "A wonderful, 'olde world' dining experience. Dark wood paneling, comfortable quiet nooks, polished and refined service. Elegant but never stuffy. Our charming waiter, Toby, was professional but, at the same time, warm and friendly. The starters were excellent (cream of celery soup and beef shin). Both fish 'mains' were wonderful. At The Buttery the tradition of excellence continues. Highly recommended."
