Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues review: luxury Geneva stay

The Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues in Geneva offers a blend of historic grandeur and modern five-star amenities, with dining experiences ranging from Nikkei cuisine to a Michelin-starred Italian restaurant, according to a recent stay.

A Historic Lakeside Address

Established in 1834, the hotel occupies a prime city centre location overlooking Lake Geneva. Its position makes it an ideal base for exploring the city on foot, with the lakefront just beyond its doors and the Old Town and upmarket shopping districts easily accessible.

While the Four Seasons brand is known for luxury, the hotel is not the most expensive in Geneva. That distinction belongs to the Hotel President Wilson, a Luxury Collection Hotel, which is famous for housing the world's most expensive hotel suite and is a well-known destination for diplomats, heads of state and international travellers.

Rooms and Dining Highlights

The rooms feature understated luxury with classic French-inspired furnishings and spacious marble bathrooms. The turndown service was a highlight, and the bathroom, newly renovated with marble finishes and high-end toiletries, included a large rainfall shower and a deep bath.

Dining was one of the biggest highlights of the stay. Izumi, a rooftop restaurant specialising in Nikkei cuisine, offered a memorable dinner with dishes such as wagyu beef, wagyu gyozas and wagyu bao buns with shiitake mushrooms and truffle cocktail sauce. The menu also includes lobster tacos with creamy wasabi and orange zest, and tuna tartare on crispy rice with gochujang sauce.

II Lago, a Michelin-starred Italian restaurant, features hand-painted frescoes and dishes such as bolognese alla genovese with lobster. The staff offered wine recommendations for each dish. Le Bar des Bergues provides a more intimate atmosphere, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a club sandwich described as the best ever had and a beef fillet plated on spinach and potatoes priced at around £60.

Wellness and Nearby Attractions

The hotel's spa, Spa Mont Blanc, includes an indoor heated pool, a separate vitality pool, a hammam, a steam room and treatment facilities, alongside a 24-hour fitness centre. The hotel also has six event spaces, including the original ballroom, Salle des Nations, with soaring ceilings, grand chandeliers and large gilt mirrors.

The hotel's location beside Lake Geneva puts many sights within walking distance, including the Jet d'Eau fountain, the Old Town known as La Vieille Ville, and St Pierre Cathedral, which dates back to the 12th century. The city's chocolate shops, including Favanger and a Lindt shop, are also nearby. The hotel is less than 20 minutes from the airport, 10 minutes from the train station and a five-minute walk from a bus stop that connects to Annecy.

Nearby landmarks include the world's longest wooden bench at 120 metres, built in 1767, and Geneva's Flower Clock at the entrance to the Jardin Anglais, created in 1955 to honour the city's watchmaking industry.
