The beloved fish and chip dining train experience is making a triumphant return to the North Norfolk Railway for the 2026 season, offering railway enthusiasts and food lovers a unique coastal journey. This heritage railway has scheduled twenty-six special trips, combining traditional British fare with nostalgic travel.
Scenic Journeys and Vintage Ambiance
From April 1st to September 30th, 2026, the trains will operate between Sheringham and Holt, completing a picturesque round trip in approximately ninety minutes. Passengers will travel through stunning coastal and countryside vistas aboard meticulously restored heritage carriages.
Guests can choose between two distinct vintage settings: the elegant 1930s Art Deco Gresley Buffet Car or the classic 1950s British Railways carriages. Both options provide an authentic period atmosphere, enhancing the overall dining experience.
Traditional Dining on Rails
On select Wednesday evenings at 6:30 PM, the specially designated 'Norfolk Fryer' dining car will serve its signature dish: Cod and Chips prepared the classic Sheringham way. The fish is cooked using beef fat sourced from a top local chippy, ensuring authentic flavour. Vegetarian and gluten-free alternatives will also be available to cater to diverse dietary requirements.
Following the main course, ticketholders will enjoy a luxurious, handmade tub of ice cream crafted by Norfolk producers Ronaldo's. A fully licensed bar on board offers a wide selection of soft drinks, alcoholic beverages, and non-alcoholic options to complement the meal.
Practical Information and Booking Details
Tickets for this highly sought-after experience are priced at £87.50 for a table of two. Advance booking is strongly recommended due to anticipated high demand. The railway's website advises guests to remain seated while refreshments are served to ensure a smooth and safe journey.
Please note that due to service delivery constraints, high chairs and wheelchair accommodation will not be available in the dining carriages. Additionally, dogs are not permitted on the Dining Train services.
The Growing Trend of Railway Dining
This innovative dining train is part of a broader trend combining railways with culinary experiences. Recently, a café in Kent gained viral attention for delivering food to customers via model trains.
The Nibbles Railway Café in Newenden, Ashford District, Kent, offers what it describes as a 'truly unique dining experience where nostalgia meets novelty.' Their website invites customers to 'watch your breakfast roll in - literally - delivered to your table by a beautifully restored vintage N gauge railway.'
The café has amassed a substantial social media following, with over 20,000 Instagram followers. Videos showcase trains delivering mugs of coffee, full English breakfasts, and even playful additions like Playmobil characters as passengers. Seasonal decorations, such as spooky Halloween skulls, add to the charm.
In an interview with the BBC earlier this year, owners Dave and Lindsey Wheeler revealed that business at their village café has nearly tripled since implementing the model railway delivery system. The establishment is now so popular that it is regularly fully booked, with no availability for walk-ins or takeaways.
