Behind the Scenes: Explora Journeys Develops Three New Luxury Cruise Ships

The fleet is nearing completion, providing passengers with a wider selection of vessels for their maritime adventures.

On a sunny day at the Fincantieri shipyard in Genoa, Italy, Explora Journeys is making significant progress on its next three luxury cruise ships, poised for launch in the coming years. As the upmarket brand of MSC Cruises, Explora Journeys delivers a premium all-suite hotel experience at sea, redefining luxury ocean travel.

Current Fleet and Expansion Plans

Explora I debuted in 2023, followed by Explora II in 2024, with Explora III scheduled to launch next summer. These ships offer passengers a floating hotel experience featuring five heated pools, six restaurants, and twelve bars and lounges. With a guest-to-staff ratio of 1.25:1, the vessels operate itineraries across the Mediterranean, Caribbean, and Alaska.

Now, three additional ships are in various stages of development. During a recent visit, key milestones were observed: the float-out of Explora IV, the ceremonial coin exchange for Explora V, and the keel laying for Explora VI, marking the start of its construction.

Progress on Explora IV

Explora IV dominated the dock during the inspection, with its red hull fully exposed as it awaited the float-out process. The ship is set to begin sailing in the Mediterranean from April 2027. While the royal blue accents on the stern and bow are instantly recognisable, significant work remains over the next year, including the installation of glass and windows, with scaffolding still visible.

The float-out ceremony was a crucial event, attended by delegates from the shipyard, the brand, and the region, including a priest to bless the ship. Anna Nash, chairman of Explora Journeys, joined executives on stage to symbolically turn a tap, initiating the filling of the dry dock. Millions of gallons of water were released over nine hours, enabling the conveyancing process to commence. Finishing touches will be added before the maiden voyage from Genoa to Lisbon in April 2027.

Advancements on Explora V and Explora VI

Shipyard staff continue their diligent work on the remaining vessels. Explora V, due for launch in December 2027, is at an early development stage. The ceremonial coin exchange was led by godmothers Serena Melani, the first female Italian cruise ship captain, and Fincantieri's Alice Gallo. They handed a coin to a shipyard worker, who welded it into the keel, a tradition believed to bring good luck at sea.

Explora VI, scheduled for launch in 2028, is just beginning its journey, with the first steel parts laid during the keel-laying ceremony. This milestone signifies that the entire fleet is now either operational or in development for the first time, a prospect that excites Anna Nash.

Leadership Perspective

Anna Nash expressed enthusiasm about the expansion, stating, "As our fleet grows, we are introducing more discerning guests to a new expression of luxury ocean travel. One that stands in a category of its own and challenges the idea that luxury must always be anchored to land, instead finding its home on the horizon."

This development underscores Explora Journeys' commitment to enhancing luxury maritime experiences, offering passengers unparalleled choices and amenities across global destinations.
