Essex village renamed Thorpe Bay to boost coastal appeal

Thorpe, a district of Southend-on-Sea in Essex, changed its name to Thorpe Bay to better reflect its seaside location, a move that has helped draw visitors to its award-winning beach.

Why the name changed

The commuter district, situated four miles from the city centre, added 'Bay' to correspond with its geography. The renaming gave the entire area a fresh identity while aligning with the nearest railway station's designation.

According to Essex Live, the revised name not only captured the beachfront setting but also reinforced the neighbourhood's reputation as an idyllic place, recognised for its substantial properties and beach huts.

Beach and local amenities

The award-winning shoreline features a mix of shingle and sand stretching along the Thames Estuary. The beachfront offers dining establishments and cafés, complemented by wooden decking and a dedicated cycling route.

Thorpe Bay has a vibrant leisure community, with local amenities including a golf club, yacht club, and tennis club. The neighbourhood is home to several educational institutions and places of worship, while its closeness to Southend ensures access to the city's range of amenities and services.

The area is also well regarded for commuter connections, being situated directly on the c2c railway line, which takes passengers to Fenchurch Street in London.

High street appeal

One of Thorpe Bay's biggest draws is Thorpe Broadway, which has retained the charm of a traditional neighbourhood high street. Centred around the railway station, this compact shopping area offers a mix of familiar names and independent businesses, including gift shops and specialist food retailers.

There is also a good choice of cafés and restaurants, providing places for everything from a morning coffee or leisurely breakfast to lunch and evening meals. Everyday essentials such as pharmacies, hair and beauty salons, and a selection of medical and professional services are also available.

According to Southend Council's 2024 retail survey, Thorpe Bay Broadway had 44 commercial units, of which just 9.1% were vacant at the time, reflecting the appeal of this established local shopping centre.
