Brits Discover Peaceful Protaras Off-Season with Empty Bars and Streets

Two British travellers, Mark and Judy, recently explored the eastern Cypriot resort town of Protaras during the off-season, encountering remarkably quiet scenes on the main strip. In a vlog for their YouTube channel, Gypsy Souls, they documented a leisurely stroll through the area, noting that many bars and businesses were still closed just days before the typical tourist influx begins.

Off-Season Charm Amidst Tourism Struggles

Protaras, known for its stunning beaches and vibrant nightlife near Ayia Napa, presented a different face to the couple. Judy pointed out Easter egg statues and landmarks like the Capo Bay Hotel, while remarking that most establishments were "quite closed." Despite this, they detected enticing food aromas and music in the air, highlighting the town's potential as it emerges from hibernation.

The pair eventually found an open bar called the Greenery, where Mark enjoyed a pint and they shared a kebab and chips. Reflecting on their trip, they told the Mirror, "We had a wonderful holiday and would return in an instant," praising the peaceful, crowd-free environment.

Tourism Decline Linked to Middle East Conflict

However, Cyprus faces significant challenges this summer. Hotel bookings have plummeted by 40% following recent military actions in Iran, part of Operation Epic Fury led by the US and Israel. This conflict has triggered retaliatory strikes by Iran, including a drone attack on RAF Akrotiri, a British base in Cyprus, and disruptions to key shipping lanes like the Strait of Hormuz.

AirDNA data reveals cancellation rates for short-term rentals in Cyprus soared from 15% to as high as 100% after the war began. With British travellers accounting for about a third of Cyprus's tourists—four million international visitors in 2025—the impact is substantial.

Industry Response and Travel Shifts

Chris Webber, head of holidays and deals at TravelSupermarket, noted that global events often lead travellers to pivot quickly. He observed increased interest in alternative destinations like the Caribbean, including Turks and Caicos and Tobago, suggesting holidaymakers are seeking new options amid uncertainty.

As Mark and Judy hope for more businesses to open by season's start, the broader tourism landscape in Cyprus remains uncertain, balancing off-season tranquility with economic pressures from geopolitical tensions.
