Durham Christmas Market Named UK's Most Underrated

Durham Christmas Festival has been named one of the UK's 'most underrated' Christmas markets, and it is just a 10-minute train journey from Newcastle. The historic city's festive event, centred around its annual Christmas Market, has consistently appeared on 'hidden gem' and 'most underrated' lists.

A Festive Destination Close to Newcastle

As the festive season gets underway across the North East, Christmas markets are set to take place throughout the region. While Newcastle's own Christmas Market is eagerly anticipated, with its lights switch-on event scheduled for Thursday, November 12 on Grey Street, Durham has been gaining national attention.

The Durham Christmas Festival returns from December 4-6, with the Market at its centre. Market stalls will be set up in Durham's famous Market Place, while a large marquee will be erected at Palace Green, near the Cathedral, hosting local traders.

Over 120 Stalls at Palace Green

The Craft & Producers' Marquee on Palace Green will feature over 120 stalls offering handcrafted items, gift ideas, festive decorations and seasonal food. Visitors making the 10-minute train journey from Newcastle to Durham are also encouraged to explore the businesses in the Indoor Market on their way back to the station.

Travel expert Neil Atkinson, owner of Luxury Group Stay, championed Durham as one of the 'most underrated' Christmas markets in the UK, giving particular attention to its world-renowned landmark. He enthused: "There are few places more impressive at Christmas than Durham Cathedral."
