Dog-Friendly UK Destinations: How Pets Shape Holiday Choices
A comprehensive survey of 2,000 dog owners has uncovered that six out of ten pet owners in the UK select their holiday destinations based primarily on what their canine companions would enjoy. The research highlights a strong trend where the needs and preferences of dogs significantly influence travel decisions, with many owners avoiding locations that fail to cater to their pets.
Top Doggy Holiday Spots in the UK
According to the findings, Cornwall and Devon are ranked as the most popular dog-friendly holiday destinations, closely followed by Yorkshire and London. These areas are favoured due to their abundance of dog-friendly pubs, restaurants, and scenic walking routes that appeal to both pets and their owners.
Key statistics from the survey include:
- 78% of respondents have chosen specific destinations because they believed their pet would enjoy the walks available.
- 55% actively seek out dog-friendly pubs and restaurants when planning their trips.
- 30% would never revisit a staycation location that did not meet their dog's needs, emphasising the importance of pet-friendly amenities.
Influence on Travel Behaviour and Spending
The study, commissioned by EV charging firm GRIDSERVE, also reveals how dogs impact other aspects of travel. For instance, 36% of owners decide where to make pit stops based on the availability of doggy facilities in the area. Additionally, nearly half (48%) chat to their dog while driving, and 36% opt to place their pet in the front seat during journeys.
More quirky findings include:
- 13% of owners have customised driving playlists to include songs they thought their hound would appreciate.
- 28% tend to take and share more photos of their dogs than themselves during trips.
- Men spend an average of £49 per trip on their pets, compared to women who spend £40, making men the biggest spenders in this regard.
GRIDSERVE's Initiative for Pet-Friendly Travel
In response to these trends, GRIDSERVE is enhancing the travel experience for dog owners by offering doggy bags filled with pet-friendly treats at its electric charging points across the UK over the Easter weekend. Rebecca Trebble, chief customer officer at GRIDSERVE, commented on the initiative.
Rebecca Trebble stated: "The nation holds its four-legged friends so dearly, it seems only natural to cater to them at our EV charging stations. Every Electric Forecourt is now dog-friendly, offering walking routes so drivers and their hounds can stretch their legs while they recharge."
She added, "We also found the average journey break is around 42 minutes, but the latest electric vehicles can add over 100 miles of range in less than 10 minutes, so your car will often be ready before you are. We want every stop to feel like a highlight of the journey, for drivers and their pets."
This initiative aligns with the company's broader efforts to support pet-friendly travel, including offering members 25% off charging across the UK. The research underscores a growing demand for accommodations and services that prioritise the well-being of pets, shaping the future of holiday planning in the UK.
