British Father Loses Eye in Holiday Pool Volleyball Accident
A British father has been compelled to undergo the removal of his eyeball following a horrific accident during a family holiday in Mexico. The incident occurred while Lee Cuthbert, 46, was playing volleyball with his children in their hotel pool, resulting in a severe eye injury that ultimately led to the loss of his sight.
Nightmare Scene Unfolds During Family Game
Lee Cuthbert had been enjoying a two-week all-inclusive holiday in Mexico with his wife Rachael, 41, and their children Mia, now 15, and Charlie, now 18. The family was playing volleyball in the hotel pool when other holidaymakers joined their game. Disaster struck when one of the players accidentally caught Lee's right eye with a fingernail while reaching for the ball.
"I gasped with horror as I saw his eye," recalled Rachael, a patient services advisor from Leicester. "It dug in and slashed his eye right in the middle. I couldn't help but panic as I rushed to find help." Blood was streaming down Lee's face immediately after the impact, creating a terrifying scene for the entire family.
Emergency Response and Medical Aftermath
Thankfully, a nurse was nearby when the accident happened in October 2017 and urged the family to rush to hospital immediately. While Rachael stayed with the children, Lee's parents accompanied him to receive medical attention. The true severity of the injury became apparent the next morning when Lee returned with a large bandage covering his eye.
"He had a huge bandage covering his eye," Rachael explained. "It was stitched back together, but it was only temporary. When the player hit him, his eyeball exploded instantly."
The family was forced to cut their Mexican holiday short, flying back to the UK just one week into their trip. Daily activities became challenging for Lee, who struggled with basic tasks like making a cup of tea due to his impaired vision.
Long-Term Consequences and Recovery
Medical professionals determined that Lee would never regain sight in the injured eye. A year after the accident, he underwent surgery to have the iris removed and replaced with a prosthetic. The bricklayer found some comfort in how realistic the prosthetic appeared, which helped alleviate his anxiety about the visible effects of the injury.
The family filed an insurance claim that resulted in a £15,000 payout, helping them adjust to their new circumstances. Despite the traumatic experience, Lee has not developed a fear of water activities.
"He still loves snorkelling or playing water games," Rachael noted. "He's quickly returned to my daredevil hubby."
The Cuthbert family has gradually come to terms with what they describe as their "new normal," though the memory of the poolside accident that changed their lives forever remains vivid.
