Passengers are facing extensive cruise cancellations extending into next winter as major cruise lines respond to the ongoing Iran conflict and heightened security concerns in the Middle East. The winter Arabian Gulf cruise season concluded prematurely this year due to the latest regional hostilities, and the repercussions are now affecting sailings scheduled for the coming months and beyond.
Cruise Ships Stranded in Gulf Ports
Cruise operator Celestyal, which had vessels operating in the region at the start of 2026, has this week cancelled Greek island cruises that were scheduled to depart in April. This decision comes as its two ships, Discovery and Journey, remain stranded in Dubai and Doha respectively. The vessels cannot depart until the Strait of Hormuz fully reopens and is deemed safe for maritime passage.
All impacted guests have been offered a full refund or a future cruise credit. Lee Haslett, chief commercial officer at Celestyal, stated: "Our priority remains the safety and confidence of our guests, crew and partners. While we know this will be disappointing, taking this decision now provides greater clarity and flexibility for those affected."
"Our teams are working closely with guests and travel partners to support rebooking options and ensure a smooth transition, and we remain focused on returning to service in the Mediterranean as soon as it is safe to do so," Haslett added.
MSC Cruises Reroutes Winter Itineraries
Meanwhile, MSC Cruises, whose Euribia ship is also currently in the region, is implementing precautionary measures for the winter 2026-27 season. The cruise line has already cancelled itineraries scheduled aboard MSC World Europa around the Middle East from November 2026 until April 2027.
Instead, the MSC World Europa will operate seven and fourteen-night routes around the French Antilles, departing from Martinique and visiting Caribbean islands including Antigua, Grenada and Saint Lucia. This deployment marks MSC World Europa's inaugural season in the Caribbean region, where it will replace MSC Seaview. The MSC Seaview will be redeployed to Brazil and Argentina for the winter season.
Passenger Rebooking and Refund Options
Guests originally booked on the MSC Seaview sailings will automatically be transferred to MSC World Europa. Passengers who were due to sail to the Middle East on MSC World Europa in 2026-27 can either move their booking to another sailing or request a full refund. MSC Cruises confirmed that MSC World Europa is planned to return to the Gulf region for the winter 2027-28 season, with scheduled calls at Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sir Bani Yas, Bahrain and Doha.
Industry-Wide Cancellations
The cancellations extend beyond these major operators. Other cruise lines have also cancelled their winter 2026-27 Middle East sailings, including MSC Cruises' luxury brand Explora Journeys, along with Carnival Corporation brands Aida and Costa Cruises. This collective response underscores the cruise industry's heightened caution regarding travel in the Gulf region amid persistent geopolitical tensions.
The situation highlights the broader impact of regional conflicts on global tourism and travel logistics, with cruise companies prioritising passenger safety while navigating complex operational challenges. Travelers are advised to stay informed about their rights and options as itineraries continue to be adjusted in response to evolving security assessments.
