Wagonway Lodge, a holiday retreat in Alnwick, Northumberland, offers a cosy winter escape for up to six guests and two dogs, situated just a five-minute walk from The Alnwick Garden, which hosts a range of festive events through November and December.
A Festive Base in Alnwick
The Alnwick Garden will bring back its winter lights trail from November 20, with festive markets on weekends throughout December and a special festive menu and afternoon tea at the garden's treehouse from November 19. Younger visitors can enjoy Christmas celebrations at Lilidorei from November 16, featuring glittering Christmas trees, storytelling elves, giant nutcrackers, and a grotto with private visits from Father Christmas available to book.
The lodge has availability throughout November and the first half of December, with bookings on holidaycottages.co.uk starting from £574, reduced from £686 for a weekend getaway, while longer stays work out cheaper.
Warm and Welcoming Accommodation
Wagonway Lodge features three bedrooms and two bathrooms in a single-storey, open-plan layout. The traditional stone cottage includes a wood burner-effect gas fire in the lounge, and all of Alnwick's attractions are nearby.
Guests have left glowing reviews, with one winter visitor writing: "This was a lovely property, warm and cosy and welcoming and yet also very spacious. The welcome hamper is a very nice touch and the Christmas tree was a real treat! We were extremely impressed with this property."
Another guest said: "Lovely accommodation, well equipped and extremely clean. We were there during one of the coldest snaps for a long time and we were warm and comfortable all the time we were there. An extra touch was a fabulous welcome hamper and fresh flowers. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it."
Exploring Alnwick and Beyond
Alnwick offers more than its gardens and castle, which is closed until spring, including Bailiffgate Museum, which covers 10,000 years of local history, and Barter Books, a second-hand bookshop in a former train station. The town also has independent shops, eateries, and weekly markets on Thursdays and Saturdays.
For other stays, Alnwick is home to The Tempus on the Charlton Hall Estate, which won a Gold award at the VisitEngland Tourism Awards as the best small hotel in England, and The Cookie Jar, rated the top hotel in Alnwick on Booking.com with more than 500 reviews.
One visitor last winter noted a dishwasher issue that could not be fixed over the Christmas holiday, while another five-star review said: "Perfect location for exploring the area. Well equipped and comfortable. Great cottage for holidaying with adult children and their partners."
