Which? readers have ranked the best and worst resorts in the Canary Islands, with Puerto de Mogan on Gran Canaria taking the top spot. The ranking comes as the islands attract record numbers of British holidaymakers.
Record tourism and reader votes
The Canary Islands welcomed a record 18.4 million holidaymakers last year, a sharp rise from the 69,000 who arrived in 1960 when the first commercial flight landed. Mid-20s Celsius temperatures through the summer, extensive beaches and easy access from UK airports have made the islands a favourite destination.
Despite the high demand, not all resorts are viewed equally. Which? readers voted on their most and least loved Canary Island resorts, producing a ranking from first to last place.
Top resorts in the ranking
Puerto de Mogan in Gran Canaria was named the best resort. It is described as a pretty fishing harbour nicknamed “Little Venice”, featuring canals, flower-draped white houses and a Friday market.
Puerto de la Cruz in Tenerife came second, an old-fashioned resort on the north coast with a botanical garden, seawater lido pools and Mount Teide views. Meloneras in Gran Canaria ranked third, a modern, upmarket area of large hotels linked to the Maspalomas dunes by a seafront promenade. Playa Blanca in Lanzarote placed fourth, a relaxed southern resort with a marina, a long promenade and the Papagayo beaches nearby.
