A family holidaying in Fuerteventura, Canary Islands, has reported an alleged violent incident involving two British men who they claim tipped a mother from her sunbed. The 53-year-old woman was reportedly sitting on an empty lounger when the men accused her of taking their spot.
The incident occurred at an unnamed hotel, where the woman's husband said he was napping while his wife and two daughters, aged 18 and 22, went to the pool area. The woman, who does not speak English, was allegedly insulted by the two British men, aged approximately 60 and 30, before the older man overturned the sunbed, causing it to fall on her foot. The daughters were reportedly pushed during the altercation.
Spanish Civil Guard officers were called to the scene to separate the parties. Other hotel guests criticised the men's behaviour, according to the family. The husband stated, 'I went down and two seconds later the Civil Guard arrived, which separated everyone.' The family requested a transfer to a different hotel, citing fear for their safety.
The family intends to file a formal police complaint upon returning to their home in Albacete, mainland Spain, and will seek a medical report for the mother, who is experiencing ankle and back pain. The incident has been reported by local newspaper Diario de Avisos, highlighting the ongoing 'sunbed wars' in holiday hotspots.
Sunbed conflicts have become common across Mediterranean destinations, with tourists resorting to early morning queues and towel reservations to secure prime spots by the pool.
