A British man has died and his partner has been seriously injured after being hit by a suspected drink driver outside their hotel in Los Narejos, Spain. The couple, aged 50 and 48, were crossing a road near the Costa Narejos Hotel on Tuesday night when a Peugeot 406 struck them.
The driver, a 23-year-old Irish man, failed to stop at the scene but was later apprehended by police. Authorities reported that he was three times over the legal alcohol limit and was driving without a licence. The incident occurred just after 11pm on Rio Dobra, an area known as 'Little England' due to its popularity with British tourists.
Emergency services transported the couple to the Virgin de La Arrixaca hospital in Murcia, where the man later succumbed to his injuries. A witness told local media that the car had crossed a zebra crossing at high speed, and the victims were heard speaking English.
The tragic event follows a similar incident in Lanzarote last March, where a four-month-old British baby, Harper Ayton, was killed when a car mounted a pavement in Playa Blanca. The driver in that case was a 23-year-old British woman, Olivia Brown, who was tested for drink and drugs.
