A British brother and sister who drowned off a beach in north-eastern Spain have been identified as Ameiya Del Brocco, 13, and her brother Ricardo Junior, 11. The children were on a family holiday in the Catalan town of Salou when the incident occurred on Tuesday evening.
Their father, Ricardo Senior, who had also entered the water, was rescued by emergency services and remains in hospital. Local police confirmed that the father was unconscious when pulled from the sea but was revived. The children, however, showed no signs of life and could not be resuscitated despite CPR efforts.
Family members described Ameiya, known as Maya, as intelligent and thoughtful, and Ricardo Junior, known as Jubs, as playful and kind. Their cousin, Holly Marquis-Johnson, said they were “two beautiful, bright, and deeply loved children, taken far too soon.” The children’s aunt, Kayla Jasvinder Del-Brocco, told BirminghamLive that powerful currents swept them away while swimming with their father.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed it is supporting the family and liaising with Spanish authorities. A fundraiser has been set up by the family to cover repatriation costs.
