A woman who travelled 16 hours to Scotland for a colleague's wedding has told of her humiliation after being asked to leave following the ceremony. The guest, who said it was her first wedding, was left mortified when she and a fellow colleague discovered their invite did not include the wedding breakfast.
Arriving at the reception venue, the pair searched in vain for their names on the seating plan. A master of ceremonies then approached and asked to see their invitations, telling them they were only invited to the church and evening drinks. The woman, writing on Reddit, said the exclusion was buried in 'tiny small print'. She added: 'Neither my colleague nor I had realised we weren't included in the whole event.'
The bride later revealed that she had only invited people from the office because their boss had told her it was the polite thing to do. The two guests slipped away and found a café in the Scottish Highlands to pass the time. Later, the owner of their bed and breakfast, furious at the treatment, fed them and drove them back for the evening reception.
Upon returning, they discovered they were the only evening guests among a crowd already five hours into drinking. Feeling like the sole sober attendees and fending off 'very handsy' men, they left at 10pm. The night was saved, however, by friendly locals who had heard of their fate and entertained them at a bar, with the pair enjoying a 'breakfast of gods' the next morning.
The woman also revealed she took revenge over the gift: she and her colleague had put £50 each in a card and chipped in for a bedding set from the bride's registry. They removed the cash and gave only the bedding. Reflecting on the ordeal, she said she now scrutinises wedding invitations, adding: 'If I'm only invited to the evening part that's cool but at least I'm informed.'
