I visited UK's most popular seaside town and found a better alternative 20 minutes away
Better beach than St Ives found just 20 minutes away

St Ives in Cornwall has been named the most popular holiday destination in the UK for 2026, according to Sykes Holiday Cottages. But a 20-minute drive away lies a beach that I found to be a much better alternative.

Why St Ives disappointed

St Ives is undeniably picturesque, with five sandy beaches, pastel-coloured cottages, and a vibrant arts scene featuring the Tate and Barbara Hepworth Museum. However, during a recent summer visit, I found the main beach, Porthmeor, to be overcrowded even on a weekday afternoon in July. The water was murky, likely due to heavy footfall and boat traffic, which was a letdown after visiting clearer coves like Kynance Cove and Pedn Vounder Beach.

The beach was packed with families and groups, and seagulls scavenged on litter left behind. While the town's amenities are excellent — with lifeguards, deck chair rentals, and water sports — the sheer number of tourists detracted from the experience.

A superior alternative: Gwithian Towans Beach

Later that evening, I drove 24 minutes via the Hayle Bypass to Gwithian Towans Beach at the far end of St Ives Bay. This wide, sandy beach is popular for surfing but rarely crowded, even in peak season. Backed by massive dunes, it offers plenty of space for long walks or finding a private spot behind dramatic rocks.

At low tide, Gwithian merges with neighbouring Godrevy Beach, creating a vast expanse of sand. Godrevy is famous for its iconic 166-year-old lighthouse and a colony of seals. The water here is noticeably clearer, thanks to Atlantic swells that disperse sediments, making for an invigorating swim.

Facilities and accessibility

Parking is available at the National Trust car park on the headland, with a short walk down to the beach — easier than navigating St Ives' steep streets. Facilities include a small cafe and surf shop at Gwithian, a National Trust cafe at Godrevy, and limited toilets and showers in the parking areas. The highlight, however, is the stunning sunset views from this westerly location.

For those seeking a quieter, more natural Cornish beach experience, Gwithian Towans and Godrevy Beach are well worth the short drive from St Ives.
