Bamburgh loses top UK holiday spot to St Ives in ranking

Bamburgh in Northumberland has been beaten to the top spot in a new ranking of the best places to go on holiday in the UK, with St Ives in Cornwall claiming number 1. The village, which took the title of best seaside destination in the UK for a sixth time only a few months ago, was placed behind St Ives by travel specialists Ski Vertigo.

Why St Ives came out on top

Ski Vertigo looked at factors such as accommodation, days out and access when compiling the ranking. St Ives is known for its surf-ready beaches, thriving art scene and abundance of great places to eat and drink, and has been championed for having 'everything you need' for a trip away.

Bamburgh, meanwhile, has been particularly busy of late after spells of red hot weather since the end of May. The village has a breathtaking beach that is often featured in lists of the best ones in Britain, if not the world, and a striking castle that has been used in blockbuster movies like Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023) and Transformers: The Last Knight.

Still a top choice for families

With nearly two weeks until the kids go back to school, many families will be hoping to squeeze in one last trip away before summer is over. For some, a cheap package holiday to sunnier climes will always prove too tempting, but for others, there is nothing better than packing up the car and staying on home turf for a road trip.

Consumer experts Which? had Bamburgh at the top of their seaside rankings for the sixth year in a row, but the village didn't quite have enough to reign supreme in the Ski Vertigo rankings. While it's often been described as 'picture postcard,' even the photos you see of Bamburgh don't quite do it justice, and it remains a place that needs to be visited to be truly appreciated.
