Ashbourne: Gateway to the Peak District full of independent shops

Ashbourne, a historic market town in the Derbyshire Dales district, is known as the Gateway to the Peak District and offers a mix of tradition, character and community spirit. Located on the edge of one of the UK's most loved national parks, it attracts visitors interested in beautiful architecture, independent boutiques and a friendly atmosphere.

A town of independent businesses

Wandering through Ashbourne's cobbled lanes and winding alleyways reveals elegant Georgian buildings and a range of independent and family-run shops. From antiques and interiors to fashion and jewellery, the town provides a unique shopping experience.

Among its standout independent businesses are the award-winning Mark's Family Butchers, family-owned artisan bakery The Loaf, cosy café and gift shop The Little Shed, creative homeware store Handmade Design, independent record shop Yew Tree Records and Fresh Choice, a popular local greengrocer.

History and landmarks

Surrounded by the White Peak countryside, Ashbourne is also an ideal base for exploring the nearby hills and dales. With more than 200 listed buildings, the town has a rich history. The market, held every Thursday and Saturday, continues a legacy dating back to 1257, when Ashbourne was granted its market charter.

Among its most striking landmarks is St Oswald's Church, whose 215-foot spire has dominated the skyline since the 13th century. The Old Grammar School, founded in 1585 after townsfolk petitioned Queen Elizabeth I, served local boys for more than 300 years until its closure in 1903. The town also features 17th and 18th-century almshouses, including Owlfield's, Pegg's and Spalden's Almshouses.

Full of little cafes and brunch spots, coffee shops, pubs, shops and just gorgeous views. Not far from the beautiful Dovedale stepping stones walk either so worth a visit if you're in the area!"
