Annecy: Fairytale French Town Under 2 Hours from UK

Annecy, a picturesque French town with winding canals, pastel-coloured buildings and mountain scenery, is easily reachable from Geneva, making it a perfect destination for an autumnal break. Located in southeastern France, the town is known for its historic Old Town and its setting beside Lake Annecy, with the French Alps providing a dramatic backdrop.

A Short Journey from Geneva

Sophie Harris, Senior Audience Writer, took a day trip from Geneva to Annecy while staying at the Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues. She travelled by FlixBus, and the journey took around 45 minutes. While journey times vary depending on traffic, the trip was straightforward.

Annecy offers a completely different atmosphere from Geneva, with cobbled streets, lakeside walks and plenty of places to stop for a crêpe. The town has a more traditional, romantic feel compared to the sophisticated Swiss city.

Exploring the Old Town and Landmarks

The Old Town is the best place to start exploring, with cobbled lanes lined with independent shops, cafes and restaurants. One of the most recognisable landmarks is the Palais de l'Île, a historic stone building set on a small island in the Thiou canal. Its unusual shape and position in the water make it one of Annecy's most photographed sights.

The town is compact, so many of the main attractions can be seen on foot. Even with only a couple of hours, visitors have plenty of time to wander through the streets.

Local Food and Lake Annecy

Annecy has plenty of places to pause for a bite to eat. Crêpes are a popular choice for a quick treat, and regional dishes inspired by the surrounding Alpine area are also available, including tartiflette, a combination of potatoes, cheese, onions and bacon.

Lake Annecy, known for its clear water and Alpine setting, provides a striking contrast to the narrow streets of the Old Town. On good weather days, a walk towards the waterfront offers views across the water and towards the mountains. Boat trips and other activities are available during the warmer months.

A Luxurious Base in Geneva

For the trip, Harris stayed at the Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues in Geneva, which served as a convenient base for exploring the area. The historic hotel sits beside Lake Geneva and combines a central location with an elegant atmosphere.

Geneva itself offers plenty for a weekend, from exploring the Old Town and visiting the Flower Clock to browsing chocolate shops and enjoying traditional Swiss fondue. Staying in Geneva and visiting Annecy for the day is a way to experience two destinations without the hassle of changing hotels.
