Albania's Tirana and Durres: Europe's Cheapest City Break

As prices soar for holidays in popular destinations such as Spain, Greece and France, finding a budget break is becoming increasingly difficult. However, a trip to Tirana, the capital of Albania, offers an affordable alternative without compromising on experience.

During a recent visit, a meal at a posh restaurant with wine rarely cost more than £15 per person, while a cocktail was just £5. Accommodation is also remarkably cheap: a three-night stay for two in a centrally located Airbnb came to £120, or £60 per person.

Tirana only opened to tourists in 1991 after the collapse of its Communist regime. Its difficult history is explored in museums such as the House of Leaves, which covers secret surveillance, and Bunk'Art 2, a converted nuclear bunker detailing police persecution. Despite this past, the city is now lively and welcoming, with a thriving cafe culture.

Highlights include the Dajti Ekspres cable car to Dajti Mountain for panoramic views, and the Grand Park for relaxation. The coastal resort of Durres is just 45 minutes away, with hotels under £50 a night. Restaurants like Oda serve traditional Albanian cuisine at low prices: stuffed eggplant for £3.91 and lamb for £4.48.

Direct return flights from London to Tirana can be as cheap as £56 in September, with easyJet offering fares from £36.99. Wizz Air also operates direct flights. British tourists can stay for 90 days without a visa, and driving is permitted with a UK licence for up to one year.
