For travellers weary of long journeys between sights, Europe's smallest countries offer a solution: compact dimensions that allow for easy exploration without the hassle. These micro-nations, some no larger than a shopping mall, pack extraordinary landscapes, culture and history into their pint-sized borders.
Luxembourg, the largest on the list at 998 square miles, is known as the 'Land of Castles' with over 70 medieval sites. Highlights include Vianden Castle, the Müllerthal Region's gorges and the Bock Casemates tunnel network in Luxembourg City. Public transport is free nationwide.
Andorra, sandwiched between France and Spain, covers just 181 square miles but boasts over 65 peaks above 6,500ft. It offers 191 miles of ski slopes in winter and is a haven for cyclists and hikers in summer. The Mirador Roc del Quer viewpoint provides dramatic views.
Liechtenstein, at 62 square miles, is smaller than Washington DC and can be driven across in under an hour. Despite its size, it rewards slow exploration with Alpine scenery and cultural sites.
Other tiny nations on the list include Monaco, San Marino, Malta and Vatican City, each offering unique attractions from glamorous hotels to world-class art.
