Yelp Unveils AI Chatbot to Transform Local Business Discovery
In a strategic move to revitalise its platform, online review aggregator Yelp has launched an artificial intelligence chatbot designed to help users sift through its extensive database of local business recommendations. This initiative mirrors broader industry trends, as technology companies increasingly pursue AI-driven makeovers to enhance user experience and navigation.
Navigating a Sea of Reviews
Yelp's users have long had access to a reservoir of 330 million local business reviews, covering everything from restaurants and doctors to plumbers and roofers. However, the sheer volume of commentary can sometimes overwhelm consumers, leaving them drowning in information. The new chatbot assistant aims to solve this problem by providing curated, easily digestible summaries.
For example, if a user asks Yelp's assistant for a good place to get coffee with a dog, the app will display tailored recommendations alongside relevant reviews. "This chatbot can really understand 500 reviews in a second whereas a consumer might say, 'Well, I read the first five reviews, so I guess that's good enough,'" explained Yelp CEO Jeremy Stoppelman, who co-founded the company 22 years ago.
Transparency and Human Connections
While other leading chatbots like OpenAI's ChatGPT, Anthropic's Claude, Perplexity's answer engine, and Google's AI overviews already analyse vast amounts of information, Yelp believes its chatbot will stand out by emphasising transparency. The San Francisco-based company decided to create an AI tool that shows the evidence underlying its findings, following a survey revealing that most consumers worry about misinformation or fabrications from AI technology.
"People want AI chatbots to be transparent about where they are getting the data from, they want to see the reviews alongside the results when they're doing local search," said Craig Saldanha, Yelp's chief product officer. "So we are trying to make sure the human connections stay front and center while AI handles all the drudgery of making those connections."
Competitive Pressures and Antitrust Battles
Yelp's push into AI comes during a tech boom that has more than doubled the value of the Nasdaq composite index, yet its stock price remains stagnant near late 2022 levels. Despite the popularity of its business reviews, the company has struggled to overcome consumers' habitual reliance on Google for search queries.
Google, already synonymous with search when Yelp launched in 2004, initially faced challenges with inadequate or inaccurate local business results. A two-year licensing agreement allowed Google access to Yelp's reviews, but the partnership dissolved as Google began summarising information in ways that reduced clicks to external sites. This shift has hurt Yelp, which depends on Google for over 70% of its U.S. web traffic and relies heavily on advertising revenue.
Tensions escalated when Yelp accused Google of improperly using its reviews and favouring its own services, leading to a Federal Trade Commission investigation and a 2013 settlement. Complaints persisted, triggering a U.S. Justice Department lawsuit that in 2024 condemned Google as an illegal monopoly. However, a federal judge later rejected breakup requests, opting for less drastic changes influenced by the growing reliance on chatbots over traditional search engines.
Yelp is now pursuing its own antitrust lawsuit against Google, scheduled for trial in May 2028. To diversify its $1.5 billion annual revenue, Yelp is licensing data to OpenAI for potential use in ChatGPT and betting that its chatbot's focus on human connections will attract more traffic.
A New Era for Local Search
With this AI innovation, Yelp aims to offer a more personalised and efficient user experience. "With this new technology, we really think you are going to be able to find that needle in a haystack and have a far more personalized experience," Stoppelman concluded. As the company navigates competitive and legal landscapes, its AI chatbot represents a pivotal step in transforming how consumers discover and engage with local businesses.
