Yahoo Mail Implements Storage Reduction and New Fees for UK Customers
Yahoo Mail, a prominent email provider in the United Kingdom, has announced significant changes to its service, including a reduction in free storage capacity and the introduction of new charges for additional space. The company describes these adjustments as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance service quality and user experience.
Storage Limits Slashed for UK and EU Users
Effective from May 5, 2026, Yahoo Mail will decrease the free storage allowance for users in the UK and European Union from 20GB to 15GB. This move follows a previous substantial reduction in August 2025, when the company cut free account storage from 1 terabyte (1,000 GB) to 20GB. In contrast, accounts in North America and some other regions will continue to receive 20GB of free storage, highlighting a regional disparity in the new policy.
Yahoo has communicated to customers that this change is designed to help users stay organised and improve efficiency. However, the practical impact means that any mailbox exceeding the new 15GB limit will be blocked from sending or receiving emails until space is freed up or additional storage is purchased.
New Paid Storage Plans and Management Tools
To address the reduced free storage, Yahoo is introducing new paid subscription options. Users can opt for an extra 100GB of storage at a cost of £1.99 per month, or upgrade to a 1TB plan for £9.99 monthly. Additionally, the company is rolling out a suite of storage management tools to assist users in monitoring their usage and organising their inboxes more effectively.
A spokesperson for Yahoo explained, "As we continue to update the Yahoo Mail experience, we will soon be offering all Mail users in the UK and EU 15 GB of free storage. To help all Yahoo Mail users monitor their storage levels and organise their inbox, we are introducing a new suite of storage management tools and offering options for users to upgrade to additional storage."
Impact on Users and Service Improvements
The storage reduction could pose challenges for long-time users with extensive email archives, as they may need to delete messages or invest in paid plans to maintain full functionality. Yahoo emphasises that these changes are part of broader service improvements, including the development of time-saving shortcuts and enhanced features.
For those seeking even more storage and premium benefits, Yahoo Mail Plus offers 200GB of space along with ad-free inboxes, enhanced privacy controls, and priority customer care. This plan can be combined with a storage plan to provide up to 1.2TB of total capacity, catering to users with high storage demands.
Overall, these updates reflect a shift in Yahoo Mail's strategy towards monetising storage services while aiming to streamline user experience, though they may require adjustments from customers accustomed to more generous free allowances.
