Manchester United are close to finalising their midfield rebuild with the addition of Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba to Michael Carrick's squad. The long-term target is set to move to Old Trafford, joining Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans as the club's other new midfield signings this summer.
Baleba's Role and Upcoming Season
Known for his ball-winning ability, Baleba will strengthen a United side that played 40 matches across all competitions last season. The team will also face Champions League fixtures this campaign, adding at least eight more games, with the total potentially rising depending on progress in the Champions League, FA Cup, and League Cup.
Transfer Priorities and Left-Back Search
United's transfer chiefs are focusing on completing summer business before deadline day, with the left-back position a key area of need. The club has been linked with several options, including Newcastle's Lewis Hall, though the English international may be too expensive. There have also been suggestions that United could add another attacker, despite spending close to £300 million on three forwards last summer.
Season Opener and Early Fixtures
United begin the new season on Saturday with an away match against Hull City. Their first home game of the 2026/27 campaign is against Ipswich Town at Old Trafford, followed by a trip to Everton. A significant early test comes in the fourth Premier League match, when Manchester City visit Old Trafford. United have not finished above their rivals since winning the league in the 2012/13 season. Fulham away is the final match before the extended September international break.
