Volkswagen is bringing one of its most recognisable nameplates into the electric era with the all-new ID. Polo, the seventh generation of a model that has already amassed over 20 million sales worldwide. While petrol versions are expected to continue, this electric variant marks a significant step forward for the brand. Priced from under £25,000, orders are now open ahead of UK deliveries expected by late 2026.

First impressions and design

Early access to the ID. Polo reveals a clean, modern design that retains the familiar Polo identity while feeling more mature. The build quality and attention to detail are impressive, with a solid, well-constructed feel that surpasses expectations for this class. The exterior features a softer, rounded front end with smiling LED lights, straight side lines reminiscent of previous Polos, and a full-width light bar at the rear that gives the car a wider stance.

Platform and interior space

Underpinning the ID. Polo is Volkswagen's latest MEB+ platform, designed specifically for smaller electric models. This front-wheel-drive layout maximises interior space despite the car's compact 4-metre length. Volkswagen claims room for five occupants and a boot capacity of up to 441 litres. Rear legroom is notably generous for a supermini, thanks to the flat floor and extended wheelbase of 2,600 mm. The interior feels capable of handling everyday family duties without compromise.

Powertrain and battery options

At launch, buyers can choose from two battery packs and three power outputs. The smaller 37 kWh battery is available with either 116 bhp or 134 bhp motors, offering a range of up to 204 miles. The larger 52 kWh battery paired with a 208 bhp motor delivers a maximum range of 283 miles. A hotter GTI variant with 223 bhp has been previewed as a concept and is expected to arrive in production form later. All versions support DC rapid charging as standard: the smaller battery accepts up to 90 kW, while the larger one handles up to 105 kW. Volkswagen estimates a 10-80 per cent charge in around 27 minutes for the smaller battery and about 24 minutes for the larger one.

Technology and features

The ID. Polo is packed with advanced tech. A digital key allows smartphone access, and the new Connected Travel Assist system uses online data to recognise traffic lights and automatically slow the car to a stop if needed – an unusual feature for this segment. One-pedal driving is available, along with vehicle-to-load functionality, turning the car into a mobile power source for external devices like e-bikes or camping gear. The infotainment system is slick, with a large central screen and crisp driver display. A standout feature is the retro display mode that mimics older Volkswagen dashboards, blending nostalgic charm with modern usability. Physical buttons for key functions like climate control address feedback from earlier ID models, making operation intuitive on the move.

Trim levels and optional extras

Three main trim levels will be offered from launch. The entry-level model includes LED headlights, a digital cockpit, and driver assistance systems such as lane assist. The mid-tier adds adaptive cruise control and a rear-view camera, while the top trim brings matrix LED headlights, upgraded interior materials, and heated seats. Optional extras include a panoramic glass roof, a 10-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, and electrically adjustable seats with a massage function – features rarely seen in this segment.

Rivals and market position

Priced under £25,000, the ID. Polo enters a competitive segment alongside the reborn Renault 5, the closely related Cupra Raval (expected at a similar price), and the upcoming Hyundai Ioniq 3. For Volkswagen, the ID. Polo represents a crucial step in its EV relaunch, addressing criticisms of earlier electric models by emphasising practicality, range, and familiar design. With strong range figures, fast charging, and a focus on everyday usability, the ID. Polo aims to make the transition to electric driving seamless and accessible.
