Vodafone Launches 5G Broadband Rival to BT, Virgin, Sky

Vodafone is challenging BT, Virgin Media, and Sky with a new smart home Wi-Fi solution that leverages 5G technology. Instead of relying on traditional copper or fibre optic cables, the company's latest router connects to the internet via a 5G mobile signal, enabling fast downloads and smooth streaming.

Ideal for Homes Without Full Fibre

This innovative device is particularly suited for households that cannot access faster full fibre broadband or those seeking greater flexibility. Its portability makes it an excellent choice for renters and students who frequently move homes. The setup process is straightforward: users simply plug the router into a power outlet, switch it on, and gain instant internet access without needing an engineer visit or drilling holes in walls.

Speed and Performance

The 5G router delivers speeds of up to 150Mbps, which is sufficient for streaming Netflix, sending emails, and working from home. However, it cannot match the performance of full fibre connections that offer speeds exceeding 900Mbps. For context, downloading a full HD movie takes approximately 8 minutes with this 5G router, compared to just 40 seconds over a fibre gigabit connection.

New Availability Checker

To help consumers choose the best option, Vodafone has launched an integrated availability checker on its website. By entering a postcode, customers can see whether full fibre or 5G Broadband provides the fastest speeds in their area. This tool simplifies decision-making for users uncertain about which service suits their needs.

Background and Pricing

Vodafone previously offered a 5G router called GigaCube, which has now been discontinued and replaced by this new model. Rob Winterschladen, Consumer Director at VodafoneThree, commented: "Millions of households are still paying over the odds for unreliable and slow broadband that often only reaches 74Mbps. With Vodafone 5G Broadband, we’re giving those homes a genuinely fast alternative, at great value, with no installation, no waiting, and no hassle." He added: "As the UK’s largest full fibre provider, we already bring fast, reliable broadband to more homes than anyone else – and by adding 5G Broadband, we can now reach millions more."

It is worth noting that Three, now part of Vodafone, also offers a similar 5G home broadband service. Vodafone's plans start at £21 per month, while Three's home broadband is currently priced at £11 for the first nine months.
