UK Workers Told to Use Cardboard Box for Laptops in Heatwave

Millions of UK workers are being advised to use a cardboard box this week as the nation experiences a heatwave, with temperatures potentially reaching 35C in London. The May Day bank holiday weekend saw record highs, and the scorching weather is set to continue.

The Problem with Outdoor Working

With many employees now working from home either part-time or full-time, the temptation to take laptops outside and enjoy the sunshine is strong. However, setting up a device outdoors can be problematic due to the sun's glare, which makes it difficult to see the screen and can cause eye strain.

A Simple Solution

Fortunately, there is an easy fix: a cardboard box. To create an effective shade, find a box wide enough to fit your laptop. If the box is too deep, trim it down to allow easy access to the keyboard and mouse. Position the box on its side with the opening facing you. Remove the top flaps and one side wall to give your arms enough room, then slide your laptop inside.

Important Considerations

Be aware that laptops can overheat in direct sunlight, as devices work harder in high temperatures. Ensure adequate airflow by cutting a few ventilation holes in the back of the box. This will help keep your machine running cool while you work outdoors.
