Switch 2 UK Price Hike: Grab It Before September 1

Nintendo has confirmed a new UK price for the Nintendo Switch 2, which will rise to £429.99 from September 1. The increase of £24 was announced via a brief post on X, which also set a new Ireland price of €499.99, up €30.

Price Increase Details

In May, Nintendo acknowledged that ongoing memory shortages affecting the games industry would force a price increase. While new prices were announced for Japan, the US, Canada, and Europe at that time, the UK figure was delayed until now. The US price rose by $50 to $499.99, and the UK increase was estimated at £20 to £30, matching the actual £24 rise.

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa publicly apologised for the Switch 2’s price increase and stated that it ‘does not fully account for all cost increases,’ suggesting the console may be sold at a loss even at the higher price.

Comparison with Rivals

The Switch 2’s £24 increase is far smaller than price hikes from Sony and Microsoft. The PlayStation 5 rose by £90 in March, making even the cheaper digital model £519.99. The Xbox Series X and Series S have seen increases of over £100, with the Xbox Series X now costing at least £619.99, a move unlikely to boost Microsoft’s struggling console sales.

Current Offers and Upcoming Releases

Buyers have less than two weeks to purchase the Switch 2 at its original £395.99 price. Nintendo offers custom bundles via its website, allowing buyers to add one digital game, a Switch Online membership, and a free accessory. A dedicated Pokémon Pokopia bundle costs £429.99, effectively offering a digital copy of the game for £34 instead of the usual £58.99.

Nintendo is reportedly hoping for a sales boost ahead of Christmas, with leaked images suggesting a Legend Of Zelda themed console to celebrate the series’ 40th anniversary. Its release is expected to coincide with the Switch 2 remake of The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time, scheduled to launch before the end of the year.
