Nintendo Switch 2 OLED Model Possibly Delayed Due to OLED Screen Costs
Switch 2 OLED Delayed Due to OLED Costs

Reports in Korea indicate that Nintendo is weighing the possibility of releasing an upgraded OLED version of the Nintendo Switch 2, but the higher cost of OLED screens compared to LCD panels could cause a significant delay. The current Switch 2 features a 1080p LCD screen, an improvement over the original Switch's 720p display, but it lacks the deeper blacks and contrast of the OLED panel found on the 2021 Switch OLED model.

OLED Upgrade Under Consideration

According to ZDNet Korea, an industry insider stated: “Nintendo is considering releasing a Switch 2 OLED with the resolution upgraded from HD (1280x720) of the Switch 1 OLED model to FHD (1920x1080).” The source added that if the decision is made, product development could begin by the end of 2026, with a potential launch as early as 2028. This timeline would place the OLED model roughly three years after the initial Switch 2 launch, similar to the gap between the original Switch and its Lite and OLED variants.

Cost Concerns with Rigid OLED

However, the primary obstacle is price. Another source reported: “Nintendo is considering applying rigid OLED to the Switch 2, but has not yet confirmed the release of the Switch 2 OLED due to the price difference compared to liquid crystal display (LCD) products.” Samsung Display is reportedly eager to supply the panels, but “the extent of the price increase for the Switch 2 resulting from the application of OLED is a variable.” OLED screens remain more expensive to manufacture than LCDs, which could push the console's price higher at a time when consumer hardware costs are already elevated. Analysts expect hardware prices to remain high until at least 2028.

Fan Reactions Divided

Gamers have mixed opinions on the need for an OLED Switch 2. One ResetEra user commented: “If it's true then Day 1 for me, 90% of my time with switch 1 was on handheld mode.” Another added: “I would definitely upgrade to a 2wOLED if given the chance, depending on the price I suppose.” Conversely, some players see little benefit if they primarily play docked, with one noting: “I was originally waiting for an OLED but then realized I pretty much never play the thing handheld.” The decision ultimately hinges on whether Nintendo can balance improved display technology with its reputation for affordable, family-friendly pricing.
