Sverre Nypan could conceivably have been spending his summer in North America at the World Cup, where Norway and Erling Haaland stunned Brazil on Sunday night. Instead, the 19-year-old Manchester City midfielder will travel with the club's first-team squad on their pre-season tour of Asia later this month, seizing a chance to impress new manager Enzo Maresca.
Loan Spell Cut Short at Middlesbrough
Nypan was handed his senior debut for Norway in October 2025, shortly after joining Championship side Middlesbrough on loan. At that stage, he hoped to kick on at club and international level. However, the loan at the Riverside Stadium was cut short in January, and he spent the second half of the season playing with City's Under-21 squad, ending any hope of gatecrashing the World Cup squad.
City's Investment and Belief
City paid £12.5 million for the playmaker a year ago, fending off interest from several European heavyweights after he impressed for Rosenborg in his homeland. The fee reflects the club's belief in the young Norwegian. Since returning to Manchester in January, Nypan has impressed Academy staff with his attitude, training with the first team and travelling as a non-playing member to Wembley for the Carabao Cup victory over Arsenal in March.
“Some of his technical levels are top; he's a great kid,” said then City Under-21 boss Ben Wilkinson, speaking to the Manchester Evening News in March. “Most important, his attitude and the example he has set to the rest of the boys, even though he is a similar age but just with that bit more experience in a senior dressing room, he's been an absolute credit.”
Pre-Season Opportunity
Nypan's summer off means he will be among the first cohort of City players returning for pre-season training in two weeks. He will be keen to showcase his ability as he aims for a fresh start. Another loan switch feels the most likely option for him, but his first task is creating a positive first impression on Maresca. A place in the pre-season tour squad awaits, and it's a chance Nypan will be determined to take.
