Sony's wearable air conditioner, the Reon Pocket Pro, offers a smart upgrade to traditional neck fans. Unlike standard portable fans that merely circulate air, this device uses cooling plates that sit against the back to lower body temperature. The Reon Pocket 5, launched last year, and the newer Pocket Pro, debuted in May, both operate on the same principle: worn at the base of the neck under clothing.
How It Works
The device features cooling thermal pads that make direct metal plate-to-skin contact. Hot air is vented away above the collar, requiring some clothing adjustment to keep the vent clear. A small internal fan expels the hot air, but it is barely audible unless listened for intentionally. The companion app, Reon Pocket, allows full adjustment of settings and functions.
Expert Review
Standard Shopping's tech writer Alastair Jennings tested the Reon Pocket Pro and gave it four stars. He noted: "The effect of the cooling on your body temperature is staggering and completely different to a standard portable fan." He added that while it takes some getting used to, the device is wearable without adding too much weight or bulk under clothes, though it is clear some tech is attached to the back. The device looks futuristic, "like something out of a Sci-Fi movie."
Availability and Pricing
The Reon Pocket Pro is currently sold out due to high demand. However, its predecessor, the Reon Pocket 5, remains in stock at £149 from Sony.co.uk. The Pocket 5 offers similar cooling technology and is a viable alternative for those seeking hands-free personal cooling during heatwaves.
