Sky has announced a significant price reduction on its Sky Glass television sets, offering football fans an affordable way to upgrade their viewing experience just in time for the FIFA World Cup, which kicks off on June 11. The sale, which runs until June 17, includes a 20% discount on a range of Sky Glass Air and Sky Glass Gen 2 models.
Sky Glass Air: Affordable Streaming TV
The Sky Glass Air, the newest addition to the Glass family, is now available from just £4.50 per month for the 43-inch model, equating to approximately 15 pence per day. This slim, lightweight television eliminates the need for a satellite dish or set-top box, instead streaming content directly via Wi-Fi. It comes in three sizes: 43-inch, 55-inch, and 65-inch, making it suitable for various room sizes.
To use Sky Glass, customers require a Sky TV subscription, which starts at £15 per month on a 24-month contract. Existing Sky TV subscribers can upgrade to the Sky Glass Air for £4.50 per month. Additionally, an all-in-one bundle is available, combining the 43-inch Sky Glass Air with the Essential TV package and 300Mbps Full Fibre Broadband for £39.50 per month.
Sky Glass Gen 2: Enhanced Features
For those seeking higher-end specifications, the Sky Glass Gen 2 has been reduced to £11 per month, or 36 pence per day. This model boasts a Quantum Dot 4K screen with improved brightness and colour richness, as well as a built-in soundbar with Dolby Atmos support. It also features Glance Motion Technology, which wakes the TV when someone enters the room. However, the Gen 2 is significantly heavier, with the 65-inch model weighing 26 kg, making wall mounting more challenging.
Tech Editor Dave Snelling of The Mirror praised the Gen 2’s display and sound system, noting that it offers a vibrant viewing experience for boxsets, sports, and movies. However, he pointed out that live streaming lag, though improved, can still be noticeable during events like the Six Nations or FA Cup, with Premier League matches now having a lag of just three seconds on dedicated Sky channels.
Competition and Alternatives
Sky’s sale comes amid competition from Freely, a subscription-free service that also allows users to ditch satellite dishes and is available on TVs from Toshiba, TCL, and Hisense. Meanwhile, Virgin Media is offering £300 Trip.com holiday cards to customers who purchase its Max Volt Bundle, which includes over 230 TV channels, Sky Sports HD, Sky Cinema HD, Gig1 broadband, Netflix, and an O2 SIM.
For football enthusiasts, Sky offers sports packages such as the Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle for £35 per month, covering the Premier League, EFL, Golf Majors, tennis, and cricket.
Both Sky Glass models are available on a 48-month contract. The sale ends June 17, offering a timely opportunity for viewers to upgrade before the World Cup.
