For many travellers, an overpriced in-flight fizz or a miniature bottle of sauvignon blanc is the quintessential way to kickstart a holiday. However, the debate over whether alcohol should be served on flights has recently intensified, with pub boss Tim Martin, founder of Wetherspoons, and Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary clashing on the issue. O’Leary calls for a two-drink limit and a ban on early morning airport drinks, citing passenger disruption, while Martin opposes such measures as “extraordinarily difficult” to implement.

Not Worth the Pain

When the Time Is Right

Simon Calder, Travel Correspondent: “I drink on long-haul flights if it’s an evening departure (6pm-10pm). A beer or red wine helps numb discomfort and aids sleep. But I skipped drinks on a 13-hour flight from Santiago to Heathrow that left at 2.30pm, and I was glad I did. I’ll drink again on future flights, but in moderation.”
