The Shokz OpenFit Air open-ear headphones are currently available at Argos for £64, a £30 saving on the £94 retail price. Deputy Technology Editor Henry Burrell, who tested them during a half marathon, describes them as a value option for runners.
Designed for Comfort and Awareness
The Shokz OpenFit Air feature a hook design that secures the buds over the ears, with the audio unit sitting outside the ear canal. Unlike in-ear earbuds, they do not block ambient sound, making them suitable for outdoor runners who need to remain aware of traffic and surroundings. Burrell noted that they were comfortable enough for a half marathon, living up to their 'Air' name.
Shokz is best known for bone conduction headphones, such as the OpenRun Pro 2, currently reduced to £134 at Currys. The OpenFit Air use a different design: open-ear buds that direct sound into the ear without insertion.
Sound Quality and Limitations
According to Burrell, the volume is surprisingly good for open-ear buds, enough to maintain tempo during a run. However, the audio is not as loud as in-ear earbuds and can be drowned out by loud traffic. The sound quality is not pin-sharp due to the design, but the trade-off is safety and comfort. These headphones are not recommended for use on the London Underground or aeroplanes.
Additional Features and Alternatives
The OpenFit Air also function well for hands-free phone calls, whether during a jog or at home. For those prioritising sound quality, the Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 are on sale for Amazon Prime Day at £179, down from £249.99, offering in-ear tips with active noise cancellation.
