Dubai is set to open the world's largest and most futuristic airport, Al Maktoum International Airport, following a £23.5 billion expansion and refurbishment project. The airport will feature advanced technology including robot staff and a 'no queues' concept for passengers, aiming to transform the travel experience.
Massive Capacity and Smart Systems
Al Maktoum International Airport is expected to welcome 260 million passengers every year. The airport claims it will eliminate queuing by allowing bags to be dropped off before travellers reach the terminal, meaning passengers will not need to repeat security and customs processes. Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths labelled this a “no red lights” concept while speaking to Khaleej Times.
Automated People Mover and Faster Baggage
To further enhance customer experience, the airport will feature an 'integrated underground Automated People Mover system' that eliminates the need to walk across the vast airport. This includes a multi-track train with 14 stations to transport passengers from terminals to concourses. Baggage collection will also be faster, with the new system able to process tens of thousands of bags in under 60 minutes. According to Dubai Airports, bags will be available within minutes, reducing post-flight waiting times.
Robotics and AI in Action
These advanced features will be made possible with automated travel systems, AI security checks, and robot staff. Robots will carry out tasks including baggage handling and may even handle customer service issues. According to information published by Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects (DAEP), the infrastructure developer for Dubai’s aviation sector, plans for DWC include “a new era of smart airport systems and passenger-centric facilities, taking travellers to worldwide destinations in the most awe-inspiring and comfortable way possible”.
Expansion Details and Future Plans
The expansion also includes five parallel runways and up to 400 aircraft gates. Once development is complete at Al Maktoum International Airport, the nearby Dubai International Airport (DXB) will permanently close its doors in 2035, according to reports. All operations from DXB will be transferred to Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC).
