Robot Army Delivers Just Eat Takeaways Across Tech-Savvy Sunderland in UK First
An army of autonomous robots has begun delivering hot takeaway food in Sunderland, marking a landmark deal for the United Kingdom. Starship Technologies, in partnership with Just Eat, is rolling out this innovative service in one of the country's most technologically advanced cities, which also serves as the home base for Just Eat's North East operations.
How the Robot Delivery Service Works
Customers in Sunderland can now select Starship robot deliveries directly through the Just Eat app. Delivery costs vary based on distance, typically ranging from 50 pence to £3 per order. This launch follows recent advancements in autonomous transport, including the introduction of the UK's first driverless taxis, signaling a growing trend toward robotic solutions in everyday logistics.
The service is expected to expand to other locations across the nation as demand increases, positioning the UK at the forefront of the global autonomous delivery revolution. Starship Technologies currently operates the world's largest robot fleet, with hundreds of its devices already delivering for various shops throughout the UK.
Sunderland: A Hub for Technological Innovation
Patrick Melia, Chief Executive of Sunderland City Council, emphasized the city's readiness for this cutting-edge initiative. "Sunderland is already one of the UK's most tech-forward and smart cities," he stated. "It's great to have a major local employer like Just Eat involved in this latest innovation. We're sure these robots will bring extra convenience for residents, especially people who are less mobile or unable to leave home. We look forward to seeing them supporting residents across Sunderland."
The robots have proven particularly popular with vulnerable groups, including the elderly, disabled individuals, and children, during previous grocery delivery trials in other UK regions. These friendly machines can even entertain users by playing tunes like 'Happy Birthday' or rock music, adding a personal touch to the automated service.
The Technology and Economic Impact
Starship robots are powered by electric batteries and rely on sophisticated Artificial Intelligence systems coupled with onboard cameras to navigate urban environments. Founded by Ahti Heinla and Janus Friis, the co-creators of Skype, Starship has overcome numerous challenges during development, including theft, adverse weather conditions, flooding, snow, and vandalism, to complete millions of deliveries worldwide.
Ahti Heinla believes this launch aligns with the UK's new hi-tech AI drive announced by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, potentially placing the nation at the vanguard of autonomous technology adoption. "Our robots are trained to think for themselves and learn their way around the local area with ease," Heinla explained. "The economics of robot delivery only work when the robots are truly smart: robots learn with every journey, and Starship robots have completed millions of journeys."
A recent report by Prysm Global highlights the significant economic benefits of expanding Personal Delivery Devices (PDDs) in the UK. The study projects that widespread adoption could generate £1.3 billion for the economy by 2035. Specifically, if Starship manufactures its robots domestically, it could create 555 new high-skilled jobs and boost grocery spending by £125 million over the same period.
Operational Details and Future Prospects
Mert Öztekin, Chief Technology Officer at Just Eat, revealed that the trial involves collaboration with a "diverse range of local independent restaurants" in Sunderland. The robots are equipped with robust anti-theft alarms and can operate in challenging conditions, such as marching through deep snow in Finland. Each unit can drive throughout the day without requiring a recharge, with a full battery replenishment taking just two hours.
Starship's existing grocery delivery service is already operational in several UK locations, including:
- Leeds
- Wakefield
- Greater Manchester
- Cambridgeshire
- Northamptonshire
- Milton Keynes
With over 2,700 robots deployed across 270 locations in eight countries, Starship Technologies stands as the global leader in autonomous delivery. This Sunderland launch not only enhances convenience for residents but also sets a precedent for future robotic integration in urban logistics across the United Kingdom and beyond.
