Rico Lewis Hosts Youth Camp Amid City Future Uncertainty

The morning after England's comeback win over Norway in Miami, Rico Lewis was 4,000 miles away at Hough End playing fields in Manchester, hosting his first youth football camp. The 21-year-old Manchester City star, accompanied by his sister Sacha, a promising defender in the City Women academy, welcomed nearly 200 boys and girls for a training session.

Organised by ProSportPlex, a US company expanding into UK football experiences, the camp offered children a chance to train with a professional. Sacha expressed delight at the number of young girls attending, highlighting the growth of women's football. 'It's been so good to experience it,' she told the Manchester Evening News. 'There's girls down here and hopefully I can be an inspiration to them.'

Community Commitment

Lewis, who recently helped raise money for homelessness charities with fellow footballers Phil Foden, Shea Charles, and Shea Lacey, sees the camp as part of his ongoing dedication to Manchester. 'Giving back to the city is something I'm a big fan of,' he said. 'I think a lot of it is down to my faith. That's been the eye-opener to me in helping the poor and the needy.'

During the camp, the Lewis siblings rotated among 10 groups led by former Manchester United academy coach Neil Harris. They chatted with children during water breaks, creating a personal connection. Lewis emphasised that he was no different from the kids: 'We were in their shoes when we were young.'

Career Crossroads

Despite his community efforts, Lewis faces an uncertain future at Manchester City. After turning down a sizable bid from Nottingham Forest last summer, he signed a five-year contract but made only four Premier League starts under Pep Guardiola. Lewis described the season as 'exactly what I needed,' providing clarity. 'Who knows what the future holds,' he said. 'There's a plan that is in place for me that I just have to believe in.'

Lewis knows new boss Enzo Maresca from the Treble-winning season when Maresca assisted Guardiola. The Italian worked with Lewis after training to aid his transition. Lewis is expected to return for pre-season next week and join the Asia tour. 'I'm excited to be back and excited to be playing football again,' he added.
