RB Leipzig's managing director Marcel Schafer has dismissed speculation that Liverpool target Yan Diomande will leave the club this summer, insisting the 19-year-old winger will remain at the Red Bull Arena. Schafer also revealed plans to offer Diomande a new contract in recognition of his impressive progress since joining from Leganes last year.
Liverpool's £86m Bid Rejected
Earlier this month, Liverpool indicated their readiness to table a bid of up to £86 million for the Ivory Coast international after he scored 12 goals in the Bundesliga this season. However, Leipzig are determined to keep the teenager and would demand a fee closer to £112 million if they were to reluctantly part ways.
Other reports suggest Diomande would prefer a move to European champions Paris Saint-Germain, who have also emerged as suitors.
Schafer's Stance: 'Yan Will Play for Leipzig Next Year'
In comments to German outlet Bild on Monday, Schafer made Leipzig's position clear: "Our clear intention is: Yan Diomande will play for RB Leipzig next year. In principle, we still have a four-year contract and hold all the cards. Therefore, the current developments are primarily a recognition of his performance. Nothing more and nothing less."
Schafer added that if a contract solution cannot be reached, Diomande will still honour his existing deal. "And if we can't find a solution, then we can't, but he'll still have a four-year contract. So, to reiterate: Yan Diomande will remain a Leipzig player."
Diomande Open to Premier League Move
Earlier this month, Diomande hinted he would consider a move to English football. "Would I be open to the Premier League? I don't know. I am an RB Leipzig player, but why not? My agents will sort that out. As for me I am more focused on the World Cup, that's the most important thing. It doesn't happen all the time, it's only every four years, so I am making the most of it and for the rest, we'll see."
Liverpool's Alternative Target: Bradley Barcola
Liverpool are also weighing up a potential swoop for PSG winger Bradley Barcola as an alternative to Diomande, should the Leipzig deal fail to materialize.
