Pizza Hut has been sued by one of its franchisees, Chaac Pizza Northeast, which claims that the mandatory implementation of the company's AI-based delivery system, Dragontail, resulted in significant operational failures and a $100 million loss.
The lawsuit, filed by Chaac Pizza Northeast, alleges that prior to the introduction of Dragontail, over 90% of deliveries arrived within 30 minutes. However, the AI system reportedly led to 'slower delivery times, colder product (caused by delays), and reduced customer satisfaction,' according to the legal filing.
Chaac Pizza Northeast operates more than 100 Pizza Hut restaurants across several US states. The franchisee accuses Pizza Hut of forcing continued use of the Dragontail system despite it 'materially degrading delivery metrics.'
Delivery Delays and Customer Complaints
The lawsuit details that after the rollout, DoorDash delivery drivers could see when pizzas would come out of the oven. They would wait up to 15 minutes for multiple orders to be ready before collecting them, which slowed down delivery times significantly.
This waiting period not only delayed deliveries but also caused the pizzas to become colder, leading to a decline in customer satisfaction. The franchisee claims that the system was implemented without adequate testing or consideration of its impact on operations.
Pizza Hut's Response
A Pizza Hut spokesperson told several outlets that the company is reviewing the lawsuit and will respond 'through the appropriate legal channels.' The spokesperson did not provide further comments on the specific allegations.
The case highlights the challenges of integrating AI systems into existing business processes, particularly in the fast-paced food delivery industry. As companies increasingly adopt AI to optimize operations, this lawsuit serves as a cautionary tale about the potential pitfalls of technology implementation without thorough planning.
The outcome of this legal battle could have implications for how AI systems are deployed in franchise models and the responsibilities of parent companies to their franchisees.
