OpenAI Announces Permanent London Office in King's Cross

ChatGPT developer OpenAI has revealed plans to open its first permanent London office in King's Cross, with the facility set to accommodate up to 544 employees. This announcement comes less than a week after the US technology giant paused its ambitious Stargate UK data centre project, citing energy costs and regulatory concerns as key factors.

Expanding UK Presence Despite Project Delays

The new office, scheduled to open next year, represents a significant expansion of OpenAI's operations in the United Kingdom. Currently, the company employs approximately 200 staff in London across various departments including research, engineering, customer support, policy, communications, marketing, and sales. With this new facility, OpenAI aims to more than double its UK workforce and strengthen its teams in these critical areas.

"The UK has an incredible depth of talent and a strong track record in AI," stated Phoebe Thacker, OpenAI's global head of data research programmes and London site lead. "London is already a key hub for our research and teams, and this new office gives us the space to keep building here."

Contrasting Developments in UK Investment Strategy

This office expansion follows the recent shelving of OpenAI's Stargate UK project, which was planned for multiple sites including Cobalt Park near Newcastle and the Northumberland town of Blyth - an area designated as an AI growth zone. The company indicated that investment in this infrastructure project would remain on hold until "right conditions" allow for long-term commitment to UK infrastructure development.

The Stargate initiative was originally part of a landmark technology agreement between Britain and the United States, announced during President Donald Trump's second state visit last September. Despite this setback, OpenAI maintains that the new London office demonstrates its "long-term commitment to the UK" and aligns with its goal of establishing London as its largest research hub outside the United States.

Strategic Location in Technology Hub

The new OpenAI office will occupy 88,500 square feet at Regent's Quarter in King's Cross, positioning the company within one of London's premier technology districts. This area already hosts Google's head office and will soon welcome the tech giant's £1 billion European headquarters, which will house its DeepMind AI division.

"We're seeing real momentum in how businesses, developers and institutions across the UK are using AI, and we want to support that growth," Thacker continued. "This investment reflects our long-term commitment to the UK and the role it can play in shaping how AI is developed safely and used to benefit people all over the world."

The announcement underscores OpenAI's dual approach to UK operations: while scaling back on certain infrastructure investments due to economic and regulatory considerations, the company is simultaneously expanding its research and development capabilities through this permanent London presence.
