Newcastle United Rule Out Felix Nmecha Move Due to High Cost
Newcastle Rule Out Nmecha Move Over Cost

Newcastle United have decided against pursuing Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha this summer, as the German international's price tag remains too high for the Magpies. Despite manager Eddie Howe's admiration for the 25-year-old, the club's current financial constraints make a deal unfeasible unless there is a significant shift in Dortmund's stance or Newcastle's transfer strategy.

Nmecha's Rise and Newcastle's Interest

Felix Nmecha has impressed at the World Cup with strong performances for Julian Nagelsmann's Germany side. The midfielder, who spent three years at Manchester City's academy before moving to Wolfsburg in 2021 and then Dortmund in 2023, has developed into one of Europe's most promising box-to-box midfielders. His all-action style has caught the attention of several clubs, including Newcastle. Howe considered signing Nmecha three years ago but opted for Sandro Tonali instead. Now, with Tonali potentially leaving, Nmecha's name has been put forward to Newcastle's recruitment team.

Price Tag a Major Obstacle

Initial enquiries revealed that Nmecha's price is out of Newcastle's range. Reports suggest Nmecha has a £73.5m release clause in his contract, but it cannot be activated until summer 2027. Dortmund are reportedly seeking closer to €100m (£87m) if he leaves this window. Either way, the cost is too high for Newcastle, who are operating a one-out, one-in policy this summer. The club has already banked £70m from the sale of Anthony Gordon and spent £18.5m on young French goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen, leaving the budget tight.

Potential Sales to Free Up Funds

Should Newcastle raise significant funds by selling Sandro Tonali, who has a £100m price tag, they could revisit a deal for Nmecha. However, with needs for a replacement midfielder, right-back, and a new No. 1 goalkeeper, the budget must stretch. Other players who could be sold include Nick Pope, Joe Willock, and Harvey Barnes. The club also plans to run with a tighter squad given they have no European football this season.

Alternative Targets and Future Possibilities

Sporting director Ross Wilson and the recruitment team continue to search for value-for-money deals in Europe and South America, including players with release clauses they can activate. Nmecha could still move this summer, with Manchester United among the interested clubs. His €80m (£69m) release clause activates in summer 2027 and drops to €70m (£60m) the following year. For now, Newcastle have ruled out a move, but the situation could change if funds become available.
